Jerzy (Georg) Daniel Schultz was born in Gdansk, Poland, probably about 1615. He learnt the art of painting in the workshop of a famous painter, his uncle, Daniel Schultz the Older (?-1646), for about five years. After his death Jerzy Daniel went to the Netherlands and France to study there. It took him about three years. He came back to Poland in 1649 and became a private painter to the new Polish king - John II. After the abdication of John II, he was private painter to the next two kings - Michael I and John III.
In 1660 artist came back to his hometown, Gdansk. But even then didn't quit working for kings.
He died in Gdansk in 1683.
Some parts of his biography are still unknown and undiscovered.
He used to paint as Daniel Schultz the Younger and won his fame on great portraits of Polish kings and other important polish nobles. His paintings are the best part of the Polish Baroque art. We can see in them a big influence of Dutch and Flemish masters of the 17th century, especially Rembrandt. Typical for Schultz's paintings are also experiments with light and shade, deep colours and very high technical level. Also in his portraits we can see some kind of psychological deepness, which tells us very much about the character of the painted person. Between 1660 and 1669 Schultz started a new period of his art life - he painted few nature paintings. The most interesting of them are "The Duck Hunt" and "The Three Foxes".
Schultz's painting was surely one of his age best portraitists among Rembrandt, Rubens, Murilllo and Van Dyck.
Schultz's works were engraved by artists such as Killian family,
Falck, Hondius,
Lombart or
Meyssens.
